Safe sleep is one of the most important topics for parents of newborns and toddlers. Safe sleep practices can significantly reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Sleep Position
Place your baby on their back to sleep (supine position), not on their side or stomach. This position is the safest and has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of SIDS. The back position applies to both nighttime sleep and naps.
Safe Sleep Environment
Use a firm mattress in a crib or travel cot that carries the CE safety mark (European safety standard). Keep soft objects away from the sleep area: pillows, blankets, stuffed animals and crib bumpers should not be inside the crib. Use only a fitted sheet tucked tightly around the mattress. Keep the room at 18-22°C and ensure it is a smoke-free environment.
Sleep Duration by Age
Newborns need 16-17 hours of sleep daily, infants aged 6-12 months need approximately 12-16 hours, and toddlers aged 1-2 need 11-14 hours. Establishing a consistent bedtime routine (bath, story, lullaby) helps regulate sleep patterns and improves sleep quality for both child and parents.
When They Wake at Night
If your baby wakes at night, do not immediately turn on full lighting. Use dim light and a calm voice to soothe them back to sleep. Avoid bringing your baby into your own bed, as bed-sharing increases the risk of SIDS and can create difficulties with sleep routines.
